The field of entries vying for a $350,000 first place paycheck has been narrowed substantially, as the first round of the National Reining Horse Association Open Futurity wrapped up Saturday, November 27. On Friday, Nov. 26, the Limited Non Pro competition of the National Reining Horse Association Adequan® North American Affiliate Championships took place in the Adequan® Arena at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In addition to the aged event taking place in the Jim Norick Coliseum, the NRHA Futurity features exhibitors from across North America who qualify to compete for prestigious titles in Oklahoma City.
In addition to incredible prizes from NRHA Corporate Partners, the champion of each of the 17 NAAC classes are presented an Adequan® Championship vest the following day in the Jim Norick Coliseum as a show of support for these successful affiliate riders.
Glen Roach, of Spanish Fork, Utah, topped the Adequan® NAAC Limited Non Pro riding Freckles Nu Lil Gun to a 218 for earnings of $727. Roach also won the ancillary Limited Non Pro class that was run concurrently for another $222. The pair also won prizes including a saddle from AM Superior, a Montana Silversmiths buckle, product from Dr. Joe Carter, Platinum Performance and Classic Equine, and a gift certificate for Bluebonnet Feed.
“This mare had a really good run and then buried it on all three stops at the end. It was a fun ride,” he recalled.
The pair competed as draw 13 of the 111-horse class. “I was ok until they got to draw 70 or 80 and I realized I was holding the lead. That made me a little nervous so I spent the last hour pacing and waiting to see who would pass me, but that didn’t happen,” he said. “So, it’s great!”
Freckles Nu Lil Gun, owned by Kathleen Roach, is by Lil Gun out of Nu Bar Freckles. The 13-year-old mare has had an extensive show career, over which she has earned more than $63,000.
“We bought her a few years ago and my wife has shown her and I’ve shown her. We’ve bred her and so we have some babies from recip mares, and we’re very excited about that,” Roach said. “She’s just so easy going and tries her heart out to do whatever you ask her to do. She’s not afraid of anything, and doesn’t get excited, so that’s probably the best part about her.”
Roach added that he and Kathleen spend a lot of time riding outside the arena, including trail riding through the mountains. “We do all sorts of things to keep them fresh so they’re not in the arena all the time,” he explained.
The week’s not over; Roach and Freckles Nu Gun will show next week in the NAAC Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro. “We’ve just been meeting a lot of people and hanging out,” Roach said. “I thank my wife. This is her horse and she’s awesome to share her with me. She always takes the horse that’s less broke and let me ride the broke one.”
Taking second in both the NAAC and Ancillary Limited Non Pro were Tiffany Peterson and Neverthoughtiwould. The pair’s score of 216.5 resulted in checks totaling $578. Neverthoughtiwould, a 6-year-old gelding, is by NRHA Two Million Sire Pale Face Dunnit out of Shine Tini.

Brian Bell Wins Adequan® NAAC Open Championship on Mr Royal Hollywood
Brian Bell’s tenure in Oklahoma City is off to a great start, winning the Adequan® NAAC Open Championship on Mr Royal Hollywood, winning $3,821 as well as prizes including a saddle from Kyle Tack, a Montana Silversmiths buckle, product from Dr. Joe Carter, Platinum Performance and Classic Equine, and a gift certificate for Bluebonnet Feed.
Bell and Mr Royal Hollywood also topped the ancillary Open, worth an additional $2,925. “They’re putting a lot more money in these NAAC classes, and it makes it more fun to keep these older horses going,” Bell said. “I’m having fun here. I showed one of my futurity horses today (Cee Miss Lilly) and was a 221 on her. She’s out of the same mare as Mr Royal Hollywood, so it was like a family event today.”
Bell and Mr Royal Hollywood, by NRHA $3 Million Sire Hollywoodstinseltown out of Miss Royal Hollywood, have had a banner year, winning approximately $70,000 prior to the NAAC. That included a third place finish at the National Reining Breeders Classic as well as a qualification for The Run For A Million presented by Teton Ridge.
The 6-year-old stallion was also the catalyst for a major career milestone. “I actually went over the $2 million mark on this horse,” Bell shared. “He’s been really solid all year. We have one more year of derbies left, so I’m looking forward to doing it all over again next year.”
My Royal Hollywood is from a family of winners bred and raised by the Bell family. The line began when Brian’s father, George Bell, acquired Hall of Fame mare Miss Cee Blair. “At one time she was the highest producing dam in history,” Bell shared. Miss Cee Blair produced 11 foals that earned almost $250k, including Cee Miss Hollywood.
“Cee Miss Hollywood’s foals have won right at $500,000 now, and of that, I’ve probably won $350,000 of it,” Bell explained. “It’s kind of cool because I know how they respond to different things and I know how to ride them. It kind of makes it easier.”
He added, “I thank all the sponsors that put all the money up for the show and everyone who puts these shows on. I also thank my dad and his wife Carol for keeping me on good horses.”
NRHA Million Dollar Rider Dany Tremblay took second in both classes on Tinker With Dreams, winning a total of $4,107. Tinker With Dreams, by NRHA Million Dollar Sire Tinker With Guns out of This Chicsdundreamin, is owned by Diamond Dub Quarter Horses.
Benjamin Beckett and Xtra Dun Step Take Adequan® NAAC Int. Open Championship
With a score of 219, Benjamin Beckett and Xtra Dun Step claimed the Championship for the Adequan® NAAC Intermediate Open. The pair also finished fourth in the NAAC Open, and won money in the ancillary divisions for both classes, earning more than $6,735 for owners Jerry Douglas and Jennifer Groehn.
“We kind of missed the first stop, but he made up for it,” Beckett admitted. “He’s as easy as they come. He does whatever you say, when you say it. It doesn’t matter if you’re showing in the green, the open, or whatever… he will do what you ask.”
With the announcement of the Bob’s Custom Showdown round for the Intermediate Open, Beckett was excited to show the talented stallion, by NRHA $12 Million Sire Wimpys Little Step out of All Thats Dun. “Oh yeah, it had a factor with us coming. Whenever there is good money up, you gotta take a swing at it,” the Michigan trainer said. “I wanted to come here and show him. When you have an opportunity to show a horse like this, you have to do it.”
Although his time in the show pen with Xtra Dun Step has been short, Beckett can still recall watching the colt as a youngster. “I remember when he was two years old and Trevor Dare showed him at the Futurity, so I have known this horse his whole show career. He’s always been phenomenal,” Beckett said. To date, Xtra Dun Step has won more than $155,000, including a third place finish with Dare at the 2017 NRHA Futurity.
Davis Hanson and Xtra Needs A Drink (Wimpyneedsacocktail x Ruby Chic Olena) took second in the NAAC and ancillary Intermediate Open with a 218.5. With money also won in the Open divisions, Xtra Needs A Drink, owned by N Anne Driscoll, added an additional $4,702 to his lifetime earnings.

Rooted in a shared appreciation for the reining horse and the sport of reining, the National Reining Horse Association and Tenda Horse Products have entered into a three-year Corporate Partnership agreement. Tenda Horse Products, based in Sandusky, Ohio, manufactures and distributes horse and pet care products, specializing in those formulated for the needs of equine athletes.
Tenda spokeswoman Allison Thorson, whose once-childhood hobby of Tennessee Walking Horse competition propelled the family’s business interests to expand into the equestrian world, is now also an avid NRHA competitor. “High quality care is a priority for our horses,“ Thorson explained. “In the reining discipline especially, we use Tenda products daily and that helps us ensure we’re providing top-of-the line care for our customers.”
NRHA President Rick Clark was thrilled with the news of the new Corporate Partnership. “On behalf of NRHA, I welcome Tenda Horse Products to the Corporate Partner family. We are honored that they have chosen to support us, and that support will help our association grow – not just at the Futurity, but at shows of all sizes. Our association is thriving, and there is no way we could do it without sponsors like Tenda Horse Products, as well as all of our Corporate Partner and Event Sponsors,” he shared.
Thorson echoed that sentiment, and added, “As advocates for NRHA’s mission of ‘promoting the reining horse worldwide, while celebrating and advancing the finest traditions of western horsemanship,’ we at Tenda are excited to be a part of the reining world and its exponential growth.”
As part of the partnership, the company is the official sponsor of the Tenda Drag Awards for the NRHA Futurity and Adequan® NAAC. The high scoring entry of each drag of the Open and Non Pro Futurity preliminary rounds receives Tenda Horse Products, which include Holistic Hoof Oil and Sheen Hair Polish & Detangler.
NRHA Senior Director of Corporate Relations and Communications Sammi Miller noted, “NRHA is proud to join with Tenda Horse Products in creating a sponsorship that promotes premium grooming products and care of our equine athletes. Tenda’s increasing support of NRHA events is a benefit seen at every level. That’s what makes this partnership so special.”
The Tenda Horse Products line includes nutritional supplements; leg, muscle, and hoof care products; poultice; healing salves; state-of-the-art wound and skin care products; topical aids; grooming products for horses and pets; and more.
Acquired in 2018, Tenda Horse Products is among several interests owned by the family, which include FarmPaint, ThorTurf arena footing, and EquiClear arena dust control solution. The latter three are produced by ThorWorks, the family’s global coatings manufacturing company. Horse power also extends to family-owned ThorSport Racing, the longest tenured NASCAR team in the sanctioning body’s truck series.

The reining industry lost a legend Nov. 24, 2021, when National Reining Horse Association Hall of Fame member Jack Brainard passed just a few months after celebrating his 100th birthday. Jack passed peacefully with his wife Kathy at his side.
Jack was inducted to NRHA’s Hall of Fame in 2009, but his connection to NRHA has spanned the Association’s life. He attended the NRHA foundation meeting, served as a director its first year, and proudly sported member number 19.
He gave back to the industry in many ways, authoring three training books, and holding judge’s cards for NHRA, the National Cutting Horse Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, and various other breed associations.
“Legendary seems too small of a word for a horseman like Jack Brainard. He is very much a part of the foundation of the sport of reining,” shared NRHA Commissioner Gary Carpenter. “Generations of horsemen and women have learned, directly or indirectly from Jack, and he has made an impact on a countless number of careers. Our industry would not be what it is without him. We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
The futurity season for reining horses is nearing completion, and in less than 24 hours, the best riders in the world will begin the intense preliminary competition at the National Reining Horse Association’s premier and most prestigious event, the NRHA Futurity. They’ll be competing for a piece of a purse that exceeds $2,000,000, highlighted by a record-breaking $350,000 check for the Champion.
Under the lights in the historic Jim Norick Coliseum, the mettle of talented 3-year-old reining horses will be tested as they’re navigated through the signature circles, spins, and sliding stops the event is known for.
While there are several futurities throughout the year, only one is known simply as “The Futurity.” Since its debut in 1966 in Columbus, Ohio, the event has grown from a handful of entries to what will be a record-breaking 599 + in 2021.
The payout has grown, and to say it has done so significantly would be an understatement. This year’s Level 4 Open Champion will leave Oklahoma City $350,000 richer and in possession of the largest limited age event championship check in the western performance horse industry. That is thanks to the generosity and dedication of a group of reining enthusiasts who created the Futurity Challenge.
Not only that, but this year’s Level 4 Open Reserve Champion will win a guaranteed $150,000, and third is also guaranteed $100,000. With that kind of money on the line, it’s not surprising that the entry lineup is not only the largest in the event’s history, it’s also stacked with horsepower and horsemen.
For stats and facts about this year’s Open Futurity entries, take a look at the Open Roster Rundown.
Winning the Level 4 Open Championship is a three-step process. All Open entries compete in the first round, which begins tomorrow, Nov. 25, with the top 75 (plus ties) advancing to the Not Ruf At All Level 4 Open Semi-Finals round on Dec. 1. There, the top 30 (plus ties) move on to the clean-slate MS Diamonds TX Level 4 Open Futurity Finals on Dec. 4.
Open riders in Levels 1, 2, and 3, who are in the top 75 of their levels (but not in the top 75 of the Level 4), will compete in the Semi-Finals Round on Nov. 30. The top 30 in each of those levels (plus ties) will earn a spot in the first section of the Open Finals on Dec. 4.
Tickets for the event are on sale now and can be purchased here.
Gennaro Lendi recorded his first earnings in the National Reining Horse Association in May 2004, when he won the Non Pro class at the Italian Reining Horse Association Derby on OT Taris High. Less than two decades later, Lendi joined the elite list of riders who have won more than one million dollars in competition.
Recent wins at the 2020 European Futurity, the Austrian Futurity, the German Breeders Futurity, the IRHA Maturity, and ARTA Futurity propelled him past that milestone.
“As I got closer to the million, it became all the more stressful as I wanted to surpass that mark as fast as I could. I put pressure on myself – especially after the pandemic stopped our shows – and it affected my performance in the show pen,” Lendi admitted.
Lendi was less than $8,000 from achieving that goal prior to the NRHA European Derby and the NRHA Germany Breeders Derby. “My focus was mainly to show my horses to the best of my ability,” he said. “I finally made it in Germany, and on top of it being a hugely emotional moment, I was thrilled I had managed to show my two 3-year-olds well and allowed them to demonstrate their talent. They gave me all they had.”
What made the moment even sweeter was that Lendi had made the breeding decisions that resulted in the two talented reiners. “Both OT Taris Yankee (Yankee Gun x OT Tarisme), owned by Cornelia Valentin, and OT Dont Miss To Wish (Dont Miss My Guns x OT Taris Wish Miss), owned by Dominico Giannitti, were also both trained by me,” he explained.
Lendi’s love for horses was fostered by his father, Rino, who bought him his first pony. “My parents simply have always had a passion for animals, even though they were not involved with horses. I decided when I was a child that I wanted to be a horse trainer,” he recalled.
He was still in single digits when he first saw a reining horse. Lendi’s father took him for lessons every weekend, and at the end of each lesson, he would go home to train his pony. “I taught him all the reining maneuvers, except for sliding stops because, of course, he didn’t have sliders. I would wait for it to rain so that, when the ground was slick, I could say ‘whoa’ and get him to stop and slide,” he said.
The first professionals to truly impact Lendi and his career were Cliff Jayhall and Dario Carmignani, and he now regularly works with leading NRHA riders Shawn Flarida and Andrea Fappani. “I truly believe that all those who have helped me along the way managed to have an impact on me because I am passionate about what I do, and I put the passion into every single moment. I think that is the secret to my success,” he shared.
Lendi was quick to give credit to the equine athletes that he’s ridden throughout his career, specifically a few special ones. “My Showbiz Whiz (Topsail Whiz x Hollywood Stunt Girl), owned by Arcese Quarter Horses USA at the time, was the 2009 IRHA Open Futurity Champion, and Piccolo Spanish (Spanish Snapper x Jokin Peppy), owned by Sabatino Quarter Horses, was the Open Reserve Champion that year. They left an indescribable mark,” he said. “In this list, I have to add Spatatino and Colonels Dancing Gun, two stallions that allowed me to express reining the way I saw it in my head. I like to see the class and finesse and style in the maneuvers; these are the characteristics I look for in horses I train and ride.”
“The fact that I accomplished this without coming from a horse-oriented family makes me even prouder. I had no one in my family to help in this profession I chose. Even though my family has always supported my passion and my choices, I never had any help. That’s probably the best thing that could have ever happened. They left me free to make my choices and mistakes,” he said. “Of course, they are super happy since this is such an important achievement in Europe, and particularly Italy.”
Lendi added there are several people who have helped him throughout his career. “I have always been very fortunate to have owners that trusted me with their horses and my program. This list is long, and I thank all of them,” he said. “I thank my family, including my father Rino, mother Marianna, my brother Francesco, and my girlfriend, Steffi, who have always been close to me in good and bad times.”
Not resting on his laurels, Lendi is looking ahead to the next career milestone. “In celebrating this million, my aim is now for two million. One goal I have is to qualify for The Run For A Million,” he shared.
